DOCTORATE (PhD) AND MASTERS (MA) GRADUATES DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS

RESULTS OF THE TRAINING PROVIDED BY IUIES

The most important contribution made by IUIES is the training of three types of professionals in specialised fields concerned with 1) cross-border policies, through a research doctorate (PhD); 2) governmental and non-governmental organisations, through a Masters in International peace operations (MA); European Union internal policies and those regarding its relations with neighbouring countries, through a Masters (MA) specific to the themes of methods, communication and planning. So far the total number of IUIES Consortium graduates is 182.

1) EXPERTS ON CROSS-BORDER POLICIES

The IUIES Consortium has trained 79 experts in fields relevant to borders, including ethnic diversity, immigrants and indigenous people, and generational differences. Of these PhD graduates 49.4% are Italian and 45.5% from other European countries. The latter group includes Romanians (11), Albanians (8), Croatians (5), Moldovans (4) and Slovenes (3). Two graduates come from Asian countries (Palestine and Japan), one from Africa (Togo) and one from North America (Canada).

The complete breakdown of cross-border policy-making experts is shown in the following table.

2) INTERNATIONAL PEACE OPERATORS (MA)

These graduates are specialised in voluntary work and the professions involved in organisations for peace and development and international governmental and non-governmental organisations. The IUIES graduates holding this Masters degree total 51. The majority of them (52.9%) are from Italy, which bears witness to the need felt in this country for training in international organisations, 21.6% come from other European countries (long-standing and new EU members alike), 7.8% from Russia, 7.8% from Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Cameroon) and 2.1% from the United States.

The second table shows a complete breakdown of the international peace professionals.

3) GRADUATES IN COMMUNITY POLICIES (MA)

The IUIES Consortium has produced 57 graduates in community policies, most of whom (55.5%) come from countries which have recently entered, or are candidates for entry to, the European Union: 16 from Albania, 6 from Romania, 3 from Croatia and 2 each from Serbia and Slovenia. Five are from Russia, and Asia (Mongolia, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria and India) and Africa (Burkina Faso and Cameroon) are also represented. Italians make up the second largest group at 24%, reflecting the abundance in Italy of trained experts in the field. IUIES may thus be said to have prepared a body of EU professionals for Balkan-Danube countries increasingly intent on joining or entering into relations with the European Union. It is significant in this regard that experts from Russia and Asian and African countries are also orientated towards Europe.

A full breakdown of the graduates in community policy-making is presented in the table below.

THE FUSION BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND ACADEMIC RESEARCH

This process, leading to the acquisition of three closely-related professional and academic specialisations at IUIES and Gorizia, is characterised by the following features:

-         PhD and MA students experience their lectures (in and outside the lecture hall) in an international environment, living with people (students and teachers alike) from a broad range of countries and communicating in a lingua franca (English).

-         The students live in the unique transnational and border-town environment of Gorizia.

-         This international dimension is further broadened by attendance at an International Summer School for 100 people in Gorizia, and by participation in field trips, work placements and research projects carried out in the Consortium’s universities.

-         Students complete their training with the production of academic work in the form of a thesis.
